Judge gives owner of Georgia King Village until April 26 to deal with the problems
Residents of Georgia King Village, an affordable housing complex in Newark’s West Ward, say living conditions there are deplorable, with mold, rats and other problems that haven’t been addressed despite their complaints. In court on Tuesday, the judge gave the owners one month to clean up its act and the homes of those who say they’ve been forced to live in squalor.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipfor some the name Georgia King is synonymous with advocacy a Memphis woman who fought for social justice and worked to prevent homelessness but not for the Newark residents living in the Georgia King Village in newark's West Ward an affordable housing complex the residents say is deplorable riddled with mold rats and other problems that haven't been addressed despite their complaints the issues landed the complex owner Ellen and management in court Ted Goldberg was in the courtroom today where a judge gave the company one month to clean up its Act and the homes of those who say they've been forced to live in squalor but you want your mother a father or family member or friend to live like this seven years G curadin has lived at Georgia King Village in Newark for 30 years she says the last seven years under l m development have produced persistent problems the rest has not been evaded no they're still there they're still there this is the whole this is what the rats do so many residents complain that Newark city council voted unanimously to strip away tax breaks from L+M if they didn't fix the problems within 60 days today an Essex County Superior Court a judge gave L+M about a month-long extension the city has two weeks to submit an amended complaint with new issues that have popped up at Georgia King Village and L+M L+M has more time to make these fixes they don't really deserve any extra time at all I really think the extension was another slap in the face of every black and brown person a big point of contention is how many of the issues at Georgia King Village have been abated lawyers for the city argue that number is about 50 percent while l m argues it's closer to 90 percent people who live in Georgia King Village say neither of those numbers sound close to the truth what they're doing is doing a lot of window dressing that's what that emphasis is has been in the past making everything look good on paper on their website and Etc while residents are sleeping and swallow your cabinets new bathrooms new refrigerators new stove and they um forgot all about the infrastructure whatever needs to be done if it can be done it should have been done so I don't know what's what time we need Ellie while kume spoke with us last month about her issues at Georgia King Village she says rats are still chewing through her apartment I'm living in fear it's I mean the site alone is I can't stand it just seen that picture what runs through my mind is and I've made a note to them what you've described is completely and utterly unacceptable Governor Phil Murphy chimed in last night on news 12's ask Governor Murphy when a caller brought up the conditions at Georgia King Village the State's Department of Community Affairs inspected the building this winter and found nearly 470 violations they'll go back and re-inspect on April 25th if there are still violations they might find L+M we have been focused on shrinking inequities in our state from the moment I put my hand on the Bible over five years ago and we certainly have a long way to go but we are at the same time the wealthiest state in America curitin says people have asked her why residents at Georgia King Village simply don't move out she says it's not that simple a lot of the people that live in Georgia King Village are poor people that can't afford to move they can't afford to to move out or they can't the cost of getting a mover or paying an extra deposit or security of first month's rent or whatever in response to our request for comment a spokesperson from l m sent us this statement our on-site management team has been working tirelessly to resolve any outstanding issues at Georgia King Village and to date has completed work to address all violations at 96 percent of the originally identified apartment units we are committed to providing our residents with the high quality affordable housing they deserve both now and in the future their next day in court is April 26th when L+M and the City of Newark meet for a scheduling conference in Newark I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight News
