Claflin University is a private institution that was founded in 1869.
It is the oldest HBCU in South Carolina and also one of the top HBCU's in SC.
Most HBCU's were established in the south after the Civil War.
Before the Civil Rights Movement, historically Black colleges and universities offered Black Americans one of their only routes to a college degree.
These institutions helped Black Americans pursue professional careers, earn graduates degrees and advanced education in an exclusive environment.
Elizabeth Evelyn Wright was the first and only woman to be a founder of a HBCU.
Wright was born on August 18th, 1872, near Talbotton, Georgia and is the founder of Voorhees College.
Allen University is named after Richard Allen, the first university named after ah African-American.
